Title: Coded Skeleton: Programmable Deformation Behaviour for Shape Changing Interfaces

Summary: We propose novel mechanical metamaterial called Coded Skeleton with sensor and actuator. The Coded Skeleton is composed of shape memory alloys (SMAs) and 3-D printable structure. Key concept in this work is isolating deformation mode. Proposed structure flexible in one deformation mode but is stiff in the other deformation modes. We call this property isolation. This properties enable us to control kinematics with linear actuator such as SMAs. We propose two novel structures and evaluate these properties. Further, we propose interactions and applications with user interfaces fabricated using our design method.
