Virtual Reality meets Physical Reality: Modelling and Simulating Virtual Humans and Environments (Full Day)

Workshop Website

High-fidelity, interactable 3D content, such as intelligent virtual humans and interactive virtual environments, drives the creation of compelling graphics innovations such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications. Creating such interactive, smart virtual content goes beyond the traditional graphics goal of attaining visual realism, giving rise to a new wave of exciting opportunities in computer graphics research. This new research frontier aims to close the loop between 3D scanning and content creation, 3D scene and object understanding, virtual human modeling, physical simulations, 3D printing, and AR/VR applications.

This workshop targets at bringing together computer graphics researchers, as well as experts in AR/VR, computer vision, robotics and artificial intelligence, to discuss the research challenges in creating virtual objects, humans and environments especially for enhancing physical and interactive realism. Specific topics of interests include, but are not limited to:

  • Affordance analysis of scenes and objects
  • Physically-grounded scene interpretation
  • Physics-based design of objects (e.g., for 3D printing)
  • Cognitive, perceptual and behavioral modeling of virtual humans
  • Virtual human interaction and human perception
  • Biomechanics modeling and simulation of human body
  • Artificial life and crowd simulations
  • Novel applications of AR/VR/haptic devices

Paper Submission

The manuscripts should be submitted as PDF files and should be in 8 to 10 pages in Siggraph paper format. All submissions must be prepared according to the ACM SIGGRAPH publication guidelines. Each paper will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers. Acceptance will be based on relevance to the workshop, novelty, and technical quality. In submitting a manuscript to this workshop, the authors acknowledge that no paper substantially similar in content has been submitted to another workshop or conference during the review period. The proceedings of the workshop will be included in the ACM Digital Library.

All workshop research papers must be original, unpublished work, written and presented in English. All submissions must be prepared according to the ACM SIGGRAPH publication guidelines. At least one author of each accepted workshop paper has to register for SIGGRAPH Asia 2016 (full conference pass) by September 30, 2016, and gives an oral presentation as well as a poster presentation at the workshop. To recognize the contribution of workshop paper presenters, the presenters can apply for a 25% registration discount per accepted paper submission.

How To Submit

Please review and carefully follow the submission requirements below. Incomplete or wrongly completed submissions will not be considered.

We strongly encourage starting the submission form well before the deadline. Submit your work before the submission deadline 5 July 2016. All forms must be completed, and all materials must be successfully uploaded by that time. The submission deadline will be strictly enforced. Please do not wait until the last minute to upload your files.

For more information about uploading files for your submission, please see Uploading Files

Educator's Resources Submission option
Those submitting content to a SIGGRAPH conference have the option of donating materials of educational value to ACM SIGGRAPH online resources for the benefit of the education community. Learn more.

For more information about uploading files for your submission, please see Uploading Files.

Evaluation

All submissions will be reviewed by a jury of academic and industry professionals. The workshops Committee Members are responsible for conducting the jury process in order to set up a high-quality program, with exciting oral sessions.

Notice To Contributors

All contributors to SIGGRAPH Asia Annual Conferences are now required to use ACM's rights management system to grant rights to publish accepted content rather than through the online submission system. Essentially, submission tracking, jury review, and acceptance remain the same, but now the rights management is through ACM, the parent organization of SIGGRAPH Asia.

You will be asked to complete an ACM rights management form, which includes permission to record and distribute the audio and video of your recorded presentation through official channels of ACM/SIGGRAPH Asia. For most content types, this will be a Permission and Release form, which allows authors to retain copyright.

More Information on these options (the FAQ is particularly useful)
Samples of the ACM Copyright Form and the ACM Publishing License

As a contributor to an ACM-sponsored event, the following expectations apply to you, should your content be accepted for presentation:

  • You have the permission to use everything that is in your presentation. This includes securing permission to use third-party material, and providing documentation of that permission to ACM. (More information on the proper use of third-party material in your presentation)
  • If you are using copyrighted musical compositions in your presentation, you must secure performing rights licenses.
  • You must have the authority to grant ACM the right to distribute your presentation.

Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution.

Upon Acceptance

Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution. You will be required to prepare the final print-ready file following the specifications in the acceptance notification.

Please note: The schedule to provide your final material after receiving the acceptance notification is very tight. Please plan your personal schedule accordingly.

For instructions about preparation and delivery of your final content for publications, please carefully follow the instructions in the acceptance letter.

You will be able to update your basic submission information and any final materials so that it can be included in the conference program and web site. This information needs to be finalized two weeks after receipt of acceptance notifications. Please be prepared to deliver your final versions of your information and work on or before these dates.

Presentation

Full-day workshops should be scheduled to have four 1.5-hour sessions, with a mid-morning break, a lunch break and a mid-afternoon break.

Presenter and Contributor Recognition

Presenters / Contributors of each accepted submission have to register for at least one conference pass. Please visit our registration page to view the various registration categories for each program.

Please see the Recognition Policy for a summary of what you will receive if your work and/or proposal are accepted by SIGGRAPH Asia.

Presenters are expected to cover their own travel costs, which are not covered by SIGGRAPH Asia.

Full Day Workshop

Workshop organizers: You can apply for a 100% discount via the submission system, up to two discounts per accepted full day workshop. In addition the organizer can also apply for travel reimbursement of up to USD $1,000 per accepted Full Day Workshop. Only organizers whose permanent residence is outside of Macao can apply for travel reimbursement.

Workshop paper presenters: The presenters can apply for a 25% discount via the submission system, one presenter per accepted submission.
