SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 23 MAY 2016, 23:59 UTC/GMT
Research on interactive technologies is an important academic discipline to investigate a fundamental problem of relationship between technology and human. In order to drive this research to be able to widely help human's life in the future, propulsion of research by making actually working prototypes with novel technological innovations is crucial. Through the experience of using or enjoying the demonstration of such prototypes, we can learn the progress of technology, we can imagine our future lives, or we can conceive further sophisticated ideas.
Interactive technology has been one of the most important inseparable wheels of SIGGRAPH and SIGGRAPH Asia, and the Emerging Technologies program has played a vital role in driving the development of research communities to pursue technological innovations and to make a great impact on the public.
At SIGGRAPH Asia 2016 we are looking for submissions that use novel interactive technologies which have possibilities to bring benefits, usefulness, or comfort, into our future lives.
These technologies may include, but are not limited to:
- 3D interaction
- Augmented human
- Brain-machine interface/brain-computer interface
- Collaborative technologies
- Device technologies
- Display technologies
- Embodiment interaction
- Haptics
- Illusion/actuality
- Interaction technologies
- Interactive visualization and other graphics technologies
- Multi-/cross-modality
- Perception/cognition
- Physical computing
- Robotics
- Sensors
- Social interaction
- Tangible UI
- Technologies for everyday life, food and kitchen
- Telepresence / Tele-existence
- Virtual and augmented reality
Feel free to submit your work even if it does not fall under the list of categories above. If it is new, cool, and exciting, we want to see it at SIGGRAPH Asia 2016!
To encourage submissions from the industry, you can choose either "industrial" or "academic" with your submission. If your work mainly contributes to the progress of academic discipline in the field of interactive technologies, you should choose the “academic track”. On the other hand, if your work is a prototype of a new product which is (almost) on the market and expected to provide an impact to consumers, you should choose the “industrial track”. You can choose both categories if your work satisfies both features. Submissions in each category are reviewed individually according to their own evaluation criteria.
The main form of presentation at Emerging Technologies is a live, working, hands-on demonstration. It is essential that your work can be effectively demonstrated by the time the conference opens in December. To ensure this, the submission process requires all submitters to provide extensive technical, logistical, and practical documentation. Running an Emerging Technologies demo is hard work, but it is also very rewarding. Your work will be experienced by thousands of people and widely reported in media. We invite submissions from academic institutions as well as corporations and individuals. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by experts in relevant fields, and the final selections will be made by the Emerging Technologies program committee members.
Accepted Emerging Technologies works will be presented as on-going demonstrations throughout SIGGRAPH Asia 2016 in Macao, China. Technical support will be provided to make the most of each demo. If your work is accepted, you will have the opportunity to give a technical presentation, advertised in the conference program. Media outreach efforts will be organized to further increase awareness and publicity. A promotional video will be widely distributed, and an extended abstract and video of each exhibit will be distributed through the ACM Digital Library for SIGGRAPH Asia 2016. In addition, if you want to give an oral presentation about your work, you may do so during the Emerging Technologies Talks session at SIGGRAPH Asia 2016.
Some of the accepted Emerging Technologies works will be chosen as "Emerging Technologies Prize" by the Emerging Technologies program committee members and reviewers at the event venue. The quality of work, how they are demonstrated onsite, and how attractive attendees view the works are criteria upon which each work will be judged.
Emerging Technologies is the most important inseparable wheels of both SIGGRAPH and SIGGRAPH Asia, because SIGGRAPH is a conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques. The goal of Emerging Technologies is to gather and show such submissions as novel interactive technologies that have possibilities to bring benefits, usefulness, or comfort, into our future lives.
The deadline for submission to the Emerging Technologies program is 23 May 2016, 23:59 UTC/GMT. Please return to this page often for further submission details and use the contact form if you have any questions.

Evaluation
Review Process
SIGGRAPH Asia 2016 Emerging Technologies is a peer-reviewed demonstration. All submissions to the program will be reviewed by the program committee and external reviewers, which consists of industry, research, and academic professionals in the fields of graphics, computer-human interactions, display systems, computing, entertainment, design, systems engineering, interface devices, art, and related fields. Reviewing is single-blind, i.e., the names of the reviewers are hidden from the author. If your work is not accepted, that is not a reflection on its quality. Because of space limitations, we are able to accept only a limited number of pieces.
Notification
Submissions will be reviewed soon after the submission deadline. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be sent via email in 5 August 2016.
Notice To Contributors
All contributors to SIGGRAPH Asia Annual Conferences are now required to use ACM's rights management system to grant rights to publish accepted content rather than through the online submission system. Essentially, submission tracking, jury review, and acceptance remain the same, but now the rights management is through ACM, the parent organization of SIGGRAPH Asia.
You will be asked to complete an ACM rights management form, which includes permission to record and distribute the audio and video of your recorded presentation through official channels of ACM/SIGGRAPH Asia. For most content types, this will be a Permission and Release form, which allows authors to retain copyright.
More Information on these options (the FAQ is particularly useful)
Samples of the ACM Copyright Form and the ACM Publishing License
As a contributor to an ACM-sponsored event, the following expectations apply to you, should your content be accepted for presentation:
- You have the permission to use everything that is in your presentation. This includes securing permission to use third-party material, and providing documentation of that permission to ACM. (More information on the proper use of third-party material in your presentation)
- If you are using copyrighted musical compositions in your presentation, you must secure performing rights licenses.
- You must have the authority to grant ACM the right to distribute your presentation.
Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution.
Upon Acceptance
Detailed information and instructions as well as deadlines will be sent to submitters along with the acceptance letter.
At the Conference
The main form of presentation in Emerging Technologies is a live demonstration, which will be available throughout the conference. You are responsible for ensuring that your demonstration is manned during all opening hours of the Emerging Technologies area. This is hard work, and over several days there will be thousands of people passing through your demonstration. Therefore, before submitting, make sure that you will have the resources to send sufficient staff to SIGGRAPH Asia 2016. We recommend at minimum two people, but four or even more could be needed depending on the nature of your work. To facilitate this, SIGGRAPH Asia 2016 provides 'Session Only' passes that entitle to access the Emerging Technologies demonstration area.
You will have the opportunity to give a short presentation, where you can explain your work in greater detail than it is possible in a demo situation. Details on this presentation will be included in the acceptance notification.
Publication
All accepted work will be documented in the SIGGRAPH Asia 2016 website and distributed through the ACM Digital Library.
Logistics
We will work closely with you to insure proper and effective installation of your work. In general, accepted researchers are responsible for bringing or shipping their work to SIGGRAPH Asia 2016 in Macao, China. Contributors are also responsible for return shipping after the conference.
You are expected to bring sufficient personnel to staff the demo throughout the conference. SIGGRAPH Asia 2016 may be able to provide some student volunteer support.
If your work arrives at the conference center, and it is not as depicted in your submission or is not ready for demonstration, we reserve the right to exclude it from the Emerging Technologies exhibition.
Presenter and Contributor Recognition
Presenters / Contributors of each accepted submission have to register for at least one conference pass. Please visit our registration page to view the various registration categories for each program.
Please see the Recognition Policy for a summary of what you will receive if your work and/or proposal are accepted by SIGGRAPH Asia 2016.
Presenters are expected to cover their own travel costs, which are not covered by SIGGRAPH Asia 2016.
You can apply for a 100% discount per accepted submission via the submission system. If additional contributors are presenting an exhibit and additional contributors need access for presentation purposes, they can request for Session only pass to the Emerging Technologies area.
Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution. You will be required to prepare the final print-ready file following the specifications in the acceptance notification.

FAQs
Will SIGGRAPH Asia 2016 pay for shipping my work?
No. If your work is accepted, you are responsible for crating, shipping, and insurance.
Should I send video documentation of my piece?
Yes, if at all possible. Video documentation is highly recommended. Time-based documentation is the best way to illustrate how conference attendees will actually experience your project. We may also use the video in publicity for Emerging Technologies.
May I submit my unfinished work as a "work in progress" if it is not complete by the submission deadline?
A work in progress may be submitted if it represents a large portion of the final version. However just a video prototype is not enough but a functional prototype should be needed before the deadline. Please explain in detail what additions will be made prior to the installation on the extended abstract. You will need to convince the reviewers that your work will be ready for demonstration in time for the conference.
I am having trouble uploading the high-resolution digital image required for online submission. What should I do?
If, due to bandwidth restrictions, you cannot upload a high-resolution image or supplemental movies, please instead upload a lower-resolution version. If we need to include a higher-resolution version for reviewers review or publication stills, we will contact you to make arrangements.
My email address will be changing soon. How can I notify you of the update?
You will be able to change your email address in the online submission system.
I have completed the online submission forms, but the system still allows me to edit my account. Am I done?
Yes. But you are allowed to edit your online submission account until the deadline: 23 May 2016, 23:59 UTC/GMT.
Can I submit a paper, brief, poster, or other work in addition to my Emerging Technologies proposal? Can I submit an Emerging Technologies proposal if the work has already been presented at a previous SIGGRAPH conference?
Yes. For instance, you could submit a demonstration based on a paper published at a previous SIGGRAPH conference. Be sure to list these related submissions in your proposal and make clear how your Emerging Technologies proposal expands on and is different from these.
If I do not need to ship my equipment, and I can carry it in with me, do I need to provide shipping documents?
If you want to carry your equipment into the convention center, please contact the Emerging Technologies Chair for detailed information on how to make appropriate arrangements.
